I only ask that you look at Him.
Teresa of Avila (1515–1582)
Imagine that (Jesus) is with you, and pay attention to how lovingly and humbly He teaches you. And believe me, make every effort to always be with this good friend.
If you get used to staying in His presence and He sees that you do this out of love and that you are trying to please Him in everything, and that you cannot be without Him, you will never lack His presence; He will help you in all your troubles and will be with you everywhere. Do you think it is a small thing to always have such a good friend at hand?
Oh, sisters, you who cannot focus deeply or concentrate your thoughts on a certain point without falling into distractions, please, get used to this way that I recommend! I know you can do it. For several years, I too struggled with my inability to concentrate on anything, and I know how tormenting it is. But I also know that the Lord will never leave us alone; He comes to keep us company whenever we humbly ask Him. If we do not achieve this in one year, let us strive to achieve it over many years, and let us not regret the time we have spent so well. Is someone chasing us? Let us therefore get used to this way and try to remain in the company of this true Master.
I do not ask you to concentrate entirely on Him, to create grand concepts and conduct deep and refined contemplations. I only ask you to look at Him. And who can prevent you from turning the eyes of your soul towards Him, even if just for a moment, if you cannot do more?
(The Way to Perfection 26,1–3)
