Does all this suffering, this dying around us, have any meaning?

Most were concerned with the question: Will we survive the camp? For if we do not survive it, then this suffering has no meaning. On the contrary, I was troubled by another question: Does all this suffering, this dying around us, have any meaning? For if it does not, then ultimately survival of the camp would have no meaning either. For a life whose meaning stands and falls with whether I preserve it or not, that is, a life whose meaning depends on the grace of such chance, such a life would actually not be worth living at all.
