How dare we make excuses based on our poverty?

Marie, truly give your heart to Jesus, He thirsts for it, He hungers, He seeks your heart to the extent that He is willing to dwell in a dirty and dark little room, just to have you for Himself!... Oh, how could we not love a friend who settles for such extreme poverty, how could we dare to excuse ourselves with our own poverty when Jesus likens Himself to His bride… He was rich, and became poor, to unite His poverty with the poverty of Marie of the Most Holy Sacrament… What a mystery of love!...

(Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, letter 109, to Marie Guérin, July 1890)
