A Carmelite is a soul attached to Christ.

Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880–1906)

In the presented poem, which is among the most beautiful from the pen of blessed Elizabeth, the author outlines the complete profile of a Carmelite.

A Carmelite is a soul that gives itself,
a soul that sacrifices itself for its God,
lives crucified with its Christ,
yet how illuminated is her Calvary!
When she contemplates the divine sacrifice,
divine lamps shine in her soul;
then she understands her divine mission
and her heart calls: “Behold, here I am!”

A Carmelite is a soul full of God.
She possesses Christ, so that she can constantly give Him.
The Lord has chosen her just like Mary,
to remain motionless at His feet.
Look at this eternal prisoner:
her life is never interrupted.
She is a soul bound to Christ,
from whom nothing can lead her away.

A Carmelite is a soul that shuts itself
off from transient things,
yet it is an open soul, full of light,
that can sense what is invisible.
The Divine Eagle carries her
and preserves her in the Father's house,
to unite her as one with God.

A Carmelite experiences hours of happiness,
faith gives her clear light,
when she is immersed in silence and solitude,
the image of the “Three” is impressed upon her.
She is a soul especially beloved by God,
chosen by Him from eternity,
for Carmel, the mountain bathed in light,
illuminated by divine rays.
