You, Lord, record every moment that a person has used to love you, and for a single moment of regret, you forget the insults they have hurled at you. I know this from my own experience and do not understand, my Creator, why the whole world does not run to your feet to establish this wondrous friendship with you. If they would come close to you, both good and bad people would be transformed. (…) If only they would allow you to be with them for a few hours each day, even though their spirit is tossed about by thousands of worries and worldly thoughts just like mine.
(Teresa of Jesus, The Book of Life VIII,6)
