Modlitwa i życie duchowe (część 1)

There are realities that perhaps should not be spoken of too much, but rather acted upon. And that is prayer and inner life. This topic is therefore very ungrateful for some kind of monologue. Especially when most students have the feeling that what they have already heard, they know, but also that they are accomplishing it. This is quite a catastrophic distortion of us, European people. Therefore, it is quite dangerous to present too many specific facts. It is always important to reveal only the first step, and as long as one does not take it, do not reveal more. What is dangerous about it is that someone may already have perhaps ten steps, while I only five, but that’s all the more reason to understand me in my struggles.

When we talk about spiritual life, we often think of realities that are the means of spiritual life. When we speak of spiritual life, we say: This is prayer, self-denial, fasting, liturgy, confession, reading the Scriptures. But spiritual life is none of these. These are merely the means of spiritual life. We should rightly only refer to it as life. If life is non-spiritual, then it is actually not life. We should learn to think in God’s way. Only he who lives in God, and in whom God lives, truly lives. And if one lives in connection with God, then one is living a spiritual life. We can call it friendship with God, grace, or a relationship of love. If one does not live in this way, then one does not live at all. Even if one shows certain symptoms of life. Such a person walks, thinks, acts, snacks, rests, works, but he is in death. It is a very dangerous delusion. Therefore, we have begun to call life as such the spiritual life, so that we can somehow distinguish it. We talk about spiritual life where a person lives in connection with God, in friendship with God, or at least strives for it. The first difficulty arises in that a person is born as a spiritually dead, deaf, blind being, closed to all spiritual influences. This unfortunate inheritance we call original sin, which marks all humanity and all creation. And while God is, people do not perceive him. While he speaks, and some spiritual authors even say that he cries out, people do not hear him. While God reveals himself, people do not see him. There is a fundamental reality missing, which is the contact, the perception of man and God.

Spiritual life begins with a tremendous activity on God’s part, which breaks through our death, our deafness, our muteness. What we are closed in and what we resist against God. When the prophet spoke about this reality of death, apostasy, and the deafness of the Israeli nation, he expressed it beautifully in chapter 11 of the prophet Hosea. “When Israel was a child, I loved him. I called my son out of Egypt. The prophets called them, but they turned away from them and sacrificed to Baals. They burned incense to carved images. Yet I taught Ephraim to walk; took them by the arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I drew them with gentle cords, with bands of love. And I was to them as those who take the yoke from their neck. I stooped and fed them. He shall not return to the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return to me.” It is the painful cry of the prophet over the situation of Israel, which did not perceive God. That God nurtured him from nothing and he turned to imaginary gods. God loved him, and even as the prophet Hosea says: “I drew him with gentle cords, with bands of love.” How else can God reach out to man than through human means, because man does not perceive God. And thus he attracts him, beckons him, penetrates into his life, nourishes him, cares for him, and waits. Because he respects human freedom, he waits for the person to see, hear, react, and eventually perceive and eventually respond. Thus begins the spiritual life.

The entire spiritual life consists of this cooperation: God’s activity and human response. At the beginning is God, who thus enters our lives, and we first learn to perceive God. This sensitivity to God’s things must be learned by every person. And everyone learns it in a different way. One learns it by perceiving the love of another person, and without realizing it, by this he perceives God. Because behind every love stands God. Whether maternal love, friendly love, betrothal, thus everywhere where a person perceives love, God is breaking into him through that love. Through the relationship to nature, where a person can see and admire, all these are human ties by which God draws a person. Ties of love. They are also events that each of us encounters in life, various encounters, but they are also moments when we are alone when we listen to ourselves or moments when we feel abandoned, burdened by illness. These are moments extremely important for spiritual life. God is a constant presence next to man, for man. When God reveals his name to Moses, he tells him: “I am the one who is here for you, for you.” This is God, who is here not only with us but is here in relation to us and specifically for us. That’s why it is so important for a person who is born as a being with no relationship to become a relational person. And that’s why every human relationship helps spiritual life. Whenever a person develops in any way in relation to others. And whether a person realizes it or not, from the very first moment when the mother bends over his crib, and when he reacts and gradually learns to respond to these expressions of love, and learns to take into account those who are around him, his siblings, classmates, and begins to perceive someone else, and even enters into a relationship with someone, all this prepares him for spiritual life. Because spiritual life does not exist without relationship. It is a reality that exists only in the personal dimension. Just like all the means of spiritual life. We cannot understand prayer if we do not understand that the foundation is precisely this perception of God. It can happen to us that our prayer is a pagan cult. Simply something I "mumble" regardless of God. Or that I want to achieve something, break someone, and thus I am getting completely somewhere else than I should be. I create my gods with a Christian coating. But our God is the one whom I must first perceive as a being and then I enter into a relationship with him. Even if that relationship is initially very hidden, little personal, it still deepens to an inner relationship of love, and finally the devotion of man to God. The spiritual life leads us to let ourselves be gifted by God. God encompasses us, and the person continually realizes that everything is a gift and everything is grace. And only when this is realized in the being and realizes that God not only gave him everything, but that he gave him himself, in his heart the desire grows to give God everything, and ultimately even himself.

The spiritual life thus has only a personal nature. It is a matter of a relationship of love, devotion, faithfulness. It is sensitivity to God’s guidance. It is sensitivity to God, who is with us, who is in us.

Therefore, any form of poverty greatly contributes to spiritual life. By poverty, we do not mean misery. This poverty can be our old age, our limitations, economic poverty, poverty of beauty, poverty of sick or disabled people. Thus, it is a deficiency that somehow limits us, and which leads us to listen. A poverty that makes us humble and sensitive to God. Therefore, it can easily happen that a disabled person who quickly orients himself in his poverty is closer to God than all official servants of the church. The danger of external activity that we consider spiritual life is indeed too great. And a person limited by his poverty has within himself an inner attitude that calls out to God. Therefore, these moments lead us to God so. Through the emptiness within us, we reach God. It is a great disposition. That is why it is necessary to appreciate these life situations and givens and to love poverty. A person who loves poverty is not afraid of old age, falling hair, teeth, graying, declining strength, because he knows that in these moments he needs God far more. And so he learns to live in dependence on God. The great danger of youth is that a person needs God, but nevertheless lives as if he did not need him, because he is sufficient on his own. St. Teresa of Avila says that God himself suffices. And some student might say: “God sometimes suffices.” Most of the time, however, we are sufficient on our own. Only when various more demanding situations arise, such as exam periods, etc.

God then enters our lives. And precisely in those moments of poverty, we are more sensitive, more perceptive, more in need. And that’s why we are closer to God. We understand far better the signs that God gives. He created us with a tremendous gift of freedom. It is strange that the limit he set for himself he never crossed. In a sense, he becomes powerless against us when he respects our freedom. And that’s why he only gives signs. These signs need to be learned to understand and perceive. People want clarity, and thus they have created idols. God gives signs of love and hope. You will best understand these signs of love because you are young people.

When a young female student is in love with a young male student, she wants to make it known. What does she do? “Hey, Frank, haven’t you noticed how pretty I am?” If she said that, Frank would surely reply: “I did, but for someone else.” However, this girl is in a certain way giving a sign of love. Usually, it is rather girls who respect freedom. Guys, they are the aggressors. And they misinterpret the evangelical saying that aggressors seize the Kingdom of God. So they do not respect freedom much. In this respect, girls resemble God much more than we do. In some way, people convey their love and wait for a free response. Thus, gentleness, these are the ties of love by which the Lord drew Israel. And God thus draws every person. And a person either perceives it or not. And God waits, the greatest joke then is that at the moment when it dawns on a person, he says: “I have found God.” So God gives signs of love and waits, and that sign can be anything. It can be a sunset, a flying bird, joy in my heart, a child’s gaze, a dying old person. All these can be words of love for me.

Then God gives signs of hope. This is already for those who are on the path. Signs by which he leads us. And just as we usually keep signs of love to ourselves, it is important to speak about the signs of hope. So that we can share how God leads us. Because God leads each individual and yet collectively. We are all under the direct guidance of God. God intervenes in the life of each of us, and at the same time connects us all in a unified flow. That’s why it is such a great encouragement for us when we see how God guides this brother, this sister, this community, how God blesses here, because that is also a sign of hope for me. That is a sign that behind this step is another step, that the path does not lead into emptiness, that it has a goal, that it is being fulfilled. Each of us can sometimes feel that the next step is already into a wall. Therefore, signs of hope are so important so that we do not renounce the God who is hidden. So that we do not invoke signs that are not of God. It is necessary to walk patiently the path of faith. This is how God acts with man before man breaks through into a relationship with God. And then he begins to increasingly realize his dependence. Life as such can only be lived in dependence on God. And a person consciously learns this dependence. This is what Jesus expressed in these words: “Without me you can do nothing.” A person knows this theoretically, he has heard it preached many times, sometimes he has even experienced it before it reaches the depth of the human being, before a person knows that he only breathes from the gift of God, has something to eat, lives, can move, that he woke up and could go to sleep in the evening, only then does he begin to live completely dependent on God. This is true spiritual life, to live in connection with God as we are capable of. This does not mean that God takes away our freedom. Dependence on God liberates a person, develops his personality, because otherwise God would deny himself. Only dependence on God makes a person human. Only in God does a person find his own face, his own identity. If you have ever met a person living for years, decades with God, you have seen how his eyes shine. How is his face spiritual. It may be wrinkled, unattractive, but there is light in it, because it reflects God. This happens when a person finds himself in God, his own identity. Outside of God, a person can never be truly himself. Even if he is the most capable, he is never what he is called to be by God. The disconnection from God has made him a creature of creation. It is actually a deviation of development, a cancerous tumor. Therefore, it is so important, and the essence of spiritual life is, after the initial perception of God, to draw ever closer to him and to live in connection with him.
